What is Turned Treen?

Treen is an old English word that is a generic name for small handmade functional household objects made of wood. See Wikipedia entry for "treen."

Turned Treen are bowls, salt and pepper mills, hollow forms, you name it, that are created using a wood lathe. The wood is turned at speeds up to several thousands of rotations per minute and hand carved with steel tools as it rotates-- hence the name "wood turning."

Woodturning is a very ancient art--some of the first lathes were thought to have been used by the Egyptians some 4,000 years ago. By the second century B.C. the woodturning lathe was known to most of the inhabitants of Europe and the Near East.

Anyway, welcome to TurnedTreen.com. This is the web site for Andy Johnson-Laird's other passion -- wood turning.
